The Level 4 Certificate in Higher Level Teaching Assistant (RQF) qualification is regulated by Ofqual on the Regulated Qualification Framework (RQF) and accredited through our Awarding Organisation, Training Qualifications UK (TQUK). This qualification is undertaken online through our easy-to-use Online Qualification System.
Qualification Information
This qualification is for learners employed in a teaching assistant role who wish to progress to Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) status or for those working as a HLTA who wish to have their practice recognised with a regulated qualification.
The purpose of this qualification is to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to enable you to address the challenges that you may meet in your workplace as a HLTA.
You will also develop an understanding of the knowledge required to support individuals and groups and to support individuals with a range of additional needs. In order to meet the requirements of this qualification, you will need to be working in a school, college or training provider setting.
Duration of the Qualification
You will have up to one year to complete the qualification, although most learners complete it with Educating UK within five to six months. Some learners may complete within a shorter time frame.
Content of the Qualification
The qualification covers 7 units:
Unit 1: Understand the Higher-Level Teaching Assistant Role
Unit 2: Child development and welfare
Unit 3: Awareness of special educational needs
Unit 4: Promoting positive behaviour in children and young people
Unit 5: Providing support for individual learners and small groups
Unit 6: Developing skills to promote positive working relationships
Unit 7: Curriculum planning, delivery and assessment
A range of topics are covered within the seven units including the role of a HLTA, working as part of a team, the stages of child development, factors that affect development, theories of development, the role of a SENCO, equality, diversity, and inclusion, common special education needs, support for SEN, promoting positive behaviour, effective communication, and curriculum planning, delivery and assessment.
Qualification Assessment Activities
The qualification is assessed through the completion of written assessments, observations, expert witness testimonies and evidence gathered when working in the role of a Teaching Assistant, Higher Level Teaching Assistant or Support Worker
What you get with Educating UK

Entry Requirements
You must:
– Have reading and writing skills adequate to meet the requirements of the qualification and be able to complete the written assessments to a good standard.
– Be working in an appropriate school for a minimum of 12 hours per week or 50 hours over the duration of the qualification. This can include voluntary or unpaid work.
– Have a colleague who is willing to work in the capacity of an Expert Witness for you throughout the duration of the qualification, to complete the Observations and Expert Witness Testimonies. Your Expert Witness must hold either a Specialist HLTA qualification at Level 4, or a Teaching Qualification at a minimum of Level 4.
